How to Create Authentic Fakemon Names

Hey, Trainers and ROM hackers! If you are designing your own custom Fakemon region, running a highly randomized Nuzlocke, or just writing some fanfiction, you already know that naming your new pocket monsters is incredibly tough. You can't just slap two random words together and call it a day—an authentic name needs to sound like it was translated straight from Game Freak's headquarters in Japan.

The secret to iconic naming conventions is the portmanteau—the blending of two or more words related to the creature's element, origin, or mythology. Think about it: Charmander is Char (burn) + Salamander. Bulbasaur is Bulb + Dinosaur. To create truly great names, you have to mash up elemental prefixes with animalistic suffixes. If you want to do some deep research into how real naming origins work, I highly suggest taking a deep dive into Pokémon lore over at Bulbapedia.

I built this pokemon name generator to algorithmically blend words just like the original creators. By selecting your elemental Type and Evolution Stage, the tool will properly scale the intimidation factor of the name. A basic Fire type might end in -let or -puff, while a Stage 2 Dragon type will end in -don or -rex. Hit generate, grab your favorite, and go fill out your Pokédex!
